It has been a while. The funny thing is that as I re-read my own blog I think: what a cool blogger! why did she quit?

I do know why, too many things going on at the same time. Specially inside my head. At some level blogging was good to clear up my mind, however, there was a point when I realized that I was having trouble not saying what was really on my mind. On one side I did not have a wish to publish that to my imaginary readership and on the other it got boring to look for topics to write about that did not involve what really mattered.

So where am I now?

I quit my good-paying-high responsibility job, I have a empty nest, I am on my way to being a long distance grandmother (sniff), I have a struggling online fabric business (Artemia) and have not solved half of the knots I have in my soul.

As I look back I see a few forks in the road that could have lead to different places. I always insist to myself that you cannot regret what you have decided to do. Meaning that you never know how things will work out. Regrets are for the decisions that you were afraid of taking.

I guess I am very privileged because every day I see options, roads ahead and choices to make. The bad thing is that they bring along anxiety and this anxiety ties those knots of my soul tighter.

My life today is solid. Friends, family, professional accomplishments, a house by the ocean, health (except for the aching joints, I am way to young to write that). I feel loved by the people I most care about. The only one that fails me is myself. There are reasons why I give myself failing grades over and over again. I should quit doing that.

As a young adult I was successful at getting away from the source of that bad energy but I went back to the light as a moth to the lightbulb. I am writing in riddles, if I keep doing this I will probably quit this blog again before I even start.

Forget it. I am cool, I am 50, I am loved and having a fulfilling happy life.

What is next?  Who knows,

Recetas para guardar Stuff worth saving.

Si pones jelly roll race en el buscador de google saltan un lote de sitios dedicados a hacer este quilt. Parece sencillo y divertido. No creo que sea saludable tratar de terminarlo en 45 minutos como proponen pero está buena la idea como para guardarla. Soledad lo estaba haciendo este fin de semana, sin entrar en la carrera parece relajante.

If you google "jelly roll race" you will find a bunch of people racing to make this quilt. If not getting all crazy to win the race to make it in 45 minutes it seems fun and relaxing. Worth saving for a rainy afternoon.

Esta es una receta que también es para guardar, la copié de un blog brasilero pero no recuerdo cual fue:
This is another recipie worth saving, I copied it form a Brazilian blog,. cannot remember which: 

2 tanjerinas lavadas tangerines washed

2 T de azúcar (capaz recortar esto un poquito), sugar 2 cups

3/4 T de aceite , oil cups

3 huevos eggs

3 T de harina flour cups

1 cta. de polvo de hornear baking powder teaspoons

  

Almíbar:  Syrup                            

1/2 T de azúcar more sugar

1 T de jugo de tanjarina 1 cup of juice.

Cortar las tangerinas  y retirar las semillas. Licuar con su cáscara.
Mezclar los bien con los demas ingredientes. 
Hornear  45 minutos en un molde de budin inglés  enmantecado y enharinadoo .
Hacer el almibar, con el jugo de mandarina (o naranja) y el azúcar en una cacerola dejando hervir unos 5 min. Pinchar el budín horneado con un palito fino s y verter el almibar caliente .Esperar unos minutos para que el almibar se absorba y desmoldar

Blend the tangerines without peeling, just take care of removing the seeds. Mix all the other ingredients. Bake on a bread pan for 45 minutes. Make syrup with juice and sugar and pour over cake when still hot. Enjoy.

Fotos de la colcha terminada - Finished quilt

Estas son fotos de la colcha de Tadeo teminada.  El diseño está inspirado en este quilt de film in the Fridge. En la foto se ve que hubo un margen de interpretación en el diseño de los bloques entre las tres costureras. La parte de atras es un trozo de tela de sábana y usamos sus colores para darle unidad al proyecto. El sesgo también fue cortado de la misma tela de atrás. El capitoneado es "free motion".  Los bloques miden 12 pulgadas, osea 30 cm. El tamaño final es 90 x 120 cm.

These are the pictures of Tadeo´s blanket, all finished with quilting and binding. The idea came from this quilt from Film in the Fridge. In the top picture you can see that there was some margin of interpretation on the block design between the three friends that put it together. The back and binding are from a bed sheet. THe quilting is free motion. Each block is 12 inches so the finished size is 36 x 48 inches.

Manta para un bebé - A quilt for a baby

Con otras dos amigas nos pusimos de acuerdo apra hacer una colcha para el bebe de Paula. El modelo está inspirado en una manta de Film in the Fridge,. Seleccionamos primero la tela de atrás de tela de sábana con lunares coloridos. Luego el deber era hacer cuadros inspirados en esos colores y evitar las telas floreadas para que la manta fuera disfrutable para un varón.

Como se me acabó el  pegamento en aerosol probe un método nuevo para fijar las capas. Tengo muchos problemas con los alfileres de gancho, simplemente no logro que las capas me queden lisas.  El método lo vi en la www, lamentablemente no anoté el sitio. Se trata de enrollar las dos capas de telas en tablas de madera. Luego se coloca el relleno en el medio y se van desenrollando por secciones. Se trabaja hilvanando solo la parte que está desenrollada de manera que es fácil controlar que todo esté alineado y lisito. Sólo tuve problemas en los bordes y las esquinas, para la próxima vez cuidaré de hilvanar esa parte más denso asi no se mueven las telas durante el quilteado. 

El capitoneado lo hice con free motion pero no tengo una foto de como quedó terminado.

 With two friends we put together a quilt for Paula and her soon to be born baby boy . It was inspired by one posted in Film in the Fridge, I will look for the link later. 
We selected the back first, big colorful polka dots, then the assignment was to make the blocks matching the colors of the back. The other rule was to avoid flowers to make it as boyish as we could. 
I run out of the spray glue for basting. Since I have trouble with pins, I decided to try something I saw somewhere on the web. I rolled the top and the back of the quilt neatly on two wood boards. I put the bottom then the batting and the top ... on top. I gradually unrolled sections of the quilt and with needle and thread basted the quilt. It worked very well except that I had trouble quilting the edges and the corners. Next time I will do that part more dense so that the fabric layers do not shift so much. 
I free motion quilted with white thread but I did not take a picture of the finished quilt. For the bias I used the same fabric that the back. 

Patchwork prism quilt along

Termine la parte de arriba del quilt del Quilt Along. Ahora va a ser mas dificil conseguir buena tela para la parte de atras. 

I finished the top of the prism patchwork quilt along.  I made less "spots" that the original design. Partly because here in Uruguay I have no access to quality cotton fabric. 

Miguelete

Regresamos a Colonia Miguelete para presentar el libro de las Mantas Traperas junto con las Señoras de la Liga Femenina de la Iglesia Valdense. La actividad la organizó el Centro Mec de Colonia Miguelete. Ellas hicieron una demostración de sus técncias y como yapa hubo demostración de hilado y otras costuras. Lindo ambiente, charla, recuerdos de ir a la escuela a caballo, de desgranar mazorcas y llevar el grano al molino para hacer la harina de maíz. Mucho amor por la vida por la gente y por el trabajo. 

 We returned to Colonia Miguelete to present the book we published last year about Country Quilts. We had interviewed the ladies of the Valdense Church and had been planning to come and visit for months. The ladies gave a presentation of their particular technique to use old clothing to make quilts and as a bonus a few ladies from town showed and shared their work. The lady of the picture receives the fleece and spins it her century old machine. I cannot find the translation for rueca...

Ultimamente no he estado llendo al gimnasio. Eso no es bueno apra mi humor especialmente ahora que los dias se están acortando. Asi fue que me meti en un QAL. Revisando encontré una colección de batiks que junté hace tiempo. Esas telas en algun momento dejaron de gustarme pero, entre el clima y el hecho de estar usando mucha tela blanca en los últimos tiempos, las vi, me encantaron y empecé a cortar.

I have not been going to the gym lately. It is not good for my mood so instead I decided to join a quilt along. I used the batiks I bought long time ago. I use to love them. Then I lost that love. But lately I have been working with lighter fabrics and with the shorter gray days of the winter coming somehow those bright colors fit perfectly. 

La cosa es que fui armando las telas en el piso y terminé ocupando toda la superficie caminable. Entonces decidí apurarme a coserlo porque la altenativa era recoger todas las noches. Terminé de cortar y armar en dos fines de semana mas algunas horas que pude ponerle durante la semana despues de trabajar. Tengo la guata y me falta la parte de atras. Quedó de dos plazas asi que el acolchado va a ser un poco cansador.

The thing is that as I lay the fabric on the floor I ended taking over the room. That meant that I had to get busy and start sewing. There was no way I would pick everything up at night. So from start to end it took two weekends and some afterwork hours on the weekdays. The top is about 70 inches square. I do not have a decent fabric for the back. But the good news is that I do have batting, and living in Uruguay that is good news indeed.

Brindo por la vida, A toast for a good life.

Recibí la noticia que falleció mi tia abuela. Ella y mi tío fueron personas que admiré. Ella una dama inglesa suave, distinguida, cálida, hermosa. Ella me enseñó a cortar los tomates para la ensalada. Él entretenido, siempre con algo interesante para contar, rodeado de un ambiente bello. Atrás están las historias viejas de madrastras injustas, mi abuelo desclasado, diferencias que felizmente no heredé y no me importaron. Hoy no tengo remordimientos, los quise y creo que ellos lo supieron. Brindo por las vidas hermosas y deseo que alguien piense eso de mi el dia que ya no me quede cuerda para seguir.

I found out that my great aunt died a few days ago. Babs and my great uncle Guillermo were persons that I admired. She was The English lady (truly English living in Uruguay), distinguished, warm, beautiful. She taught me the right way to cut tomatoes for salads. He was fun, always had interesting stories to tell, and surrounded himself with everything that was beautiful. I never minded the stories of the bad step mother, the injustices to my own grandfather´s. I have no regrets, I loved them and I think they knew. I raise a cup to toast for beautiful people wishing that somebody can do the same for me when I go.

Santa semana criolla - Easter weekend

El fin de semana pasado fuimos a Barriga Negra, siempre me rio del nombre de una Estancia vecina: El Ombligo...de Barriga Negra. Hubo juego de pelota vasca, carreras, un cementerio abandonado y mucho aire limpio. 

Over the Easter weekend we went to the farm. I always smile at the name of a neighboring farm it is called The Bellybutton, and it is located in a place called Black Belly, in Lavalleja, Uruguay. Over the weekend there was ball game, horse races, an abandoned cemetery and lots of clean year.

Fuimos a Polanco Sur donde se juntó mucha gente para las actividades del fin de semana. Sofisiticados equipos con deportivos super profesionales ... notar bombachas de campo... y la moderna tendencia de no usar calzado deportivo...

You can see very professional teams ... note the work pants. and they are way ahead... going barefoot.

 La pista de carrerras es sostenida por un muro de piedra de aspecto centenario, por eso se ven los vehículos mas abajo. El frontón también es centenario, construidos por inmigrantes vascos a principios del siglo XX. Faltó la foto del almacen de rejas, vieja pulperia que conserva los estantes y vitrinas, ahora vacías.
The place is called Polanco Sur, in Uruguay it has long been a social meeting point in an otherwise empty area. The race track is out on a field and it is held by a stone wall that looks one hundred years old. The ball court is also centenary it was built by the Vasque immigrants early XX century. 

 Los dos cementerios los encontramos por casualidad. después de errar en una bifurcación del camino. Había  algunas flores en las tumbas saqueadas. Cuando encontramos nuestra ruta llegamos a Manguera Azul. Un hermoso corral de piedra hecho con la pizzarra negroazulada de la zona.
At one point on our way home we missed a turn and ended finding two old cemeteries. There were some flowers left by visitors but overall it looked abandoned. Close to sunset when we finally found the right road we reached a place called Manguera Azul. The old stone corral is still standing made with the bluish-black stone found in the area.

 Some quilting was also done. For a block, exchange. I could pretend they got lost in the mail and keep them all... but I would miss the fun of finding what other people build with fabric. Plus the blocks are 20 cm so I still get to make another bunch to get to a decent size blanket.

 También hubo algo de costura. Podría hacer de cuenta que el correo anda mal y conservar los todos para mi. Pero son para un intecambio y si me bajo me pierdo la oportunidad de ver que es lo que otras hacen con telas. Además como los bloques son solo de 20 cm tengo que hacer otro lote para que quede una manta de un tamaño decente.

Montañas y cuadrados - Mountains and squares

La semana pasada visité la ciudad de Vancouver en Canadá. Fue una visita de trabajo, no de paseo. Me encantó la combinación de montañas con el mar. Yo soy una persona de la costa, el mar me carga las pilas. La montaña no ha sido lo mio pero no tendría mucho problema en agregar unas montañas en mi pasiaje de todos los dias. Durante el fin de semana visité unos amigos que viven en la isla Victoria. Eso si que fue hermoso, además del mar y las montañas con sus picos nevados hay hermosos bosques y pasé unos riquísimos dias soleados en buena companía.

I visited Vancouver Canada last week. It was a work visit not a visit visit. I loved the combination of mountains with white tops and water. I could live with that. I am a coastal person the sea charges my batteries I´m not a mountain forest person but I would gladly add those to my landscape. Over the weekend I was able to visit some friends that live in Victoria... now I could definitively live with that: more water, mountains, plus the forests and the happy feeling of being in good company on a sunny day. 

I además está esa aguja de crochet que me estuvo llamando y llamando. Vivo en Uruguay, aqui no hay montañas pero se puede comprar lana a buen precio. Cada uno se consuela como puede, vió? Compré un kilo de lana por 190 pesos, eso es un poco menos de 10 dólares. Son saldos en ovillos de todos los tamaños que funcionan bárbaro para hacer cuadraditos de crochet.  Fue divertido recordar como hacer los puntos. El plan es hacer una manta chica. Calculé que tengo que hacer unos 70 cuadrados, llevo hecho menos de la mitad asi que tengo para divertirme un rato. 

And then there is that crochet needle... I live in Uruguay, there are no mountains here but I was able to buy 1 kilo of wool for 190 pesos... that is less than 10 dollars for more than two pounds of wool. They were remanents so they are perfect for granny squares. It was fun to relearn to make them the plan is to make a smalll blanket. I calculated that I need about 70 squares. I have a lot to go. 

Reloj de Arena - Hour glass quilt

El domingo fuimos a la feria de Tristán Narvaja. El tesoro del dia fue el disco LP de Pedro y el Lobo que encontró Pepe. Era la misma edición que escuchaban en su casa cuando eran niños. En la feria había unas cuantas chucherías de esas que me hubiese llevado a casa. También algo de buena música. En mi próxima vida me gustaría aprender a tocar el bandoneón.
On sunday we went to Tristan Narvaja´s Flee Market in Montevideo. The treasure  of the day was an LP with a recording of the children´s tale Peter and the Wolf. It is the same one that my husband and his siblings had at home when growing up. The market was full of antiques and triquents that I would have taken home, if it wasn´t that I do not need more stuff. There was also some good music . I decided that on my next life I want to learn how to play the accordion.

Ahora terminé de terminar el reloj de arena. Le hice el quilting el sábado. Estoy en la duda si agregarle más o dejarlo asi. Estuvo bueno, comencé en una punta en diagonal y seguí sin parar llendo y viniendo hasta que regresé al punto de partida. En dos pasadas cubrí todo el quilt.

I have now finished quilting my hourglass quilt. The one I started 7 years ago. I am not sure if I will add more quilting to it. I started from one corner and went on back and forth until I returned to the starting point. I covered the whole quilt in to trips.

El viento ayudó para mostrar que es reversible. No lleva bies. Mide 1 metro por 1.40.

The wind helped to show that the quilt is reversible. There is no binding. Mesures about 37 inches by 50 inches.

Casi casi - Almost finished

I am ready  to quilt my reversible quilt.

Comencé este quilt reversible hace más de 6 años. Estuvo destinado al olvido varias temporadas pero antes de ponerme a hacer cosas nuevas decidí terminarlo. Lo hice usando las instrucciones de una revista que, entretanto, presté y perdí. Por eso decidí sacarle fotos al procedimiento antes de olvidarlo. La idea es un "quilt as you go", se arma cada cuadro y se hace el acolchado antes de unirlos. Yo decidí que el acolchado lo voy a hacer a máquina al final para darle estabilidad a la manta.

Cuando comencé este quilt todavía lavaba todas las telas antes de empezar. Esa fue mi mayor frustración la tela perdió el apresto y se deshilachó fue imposible de escuadrar bien. Pero viviendo con las imperfecciones seguí adelante.

I started this quilt more than 6 years ago following the instructions from a magazine that, since then, I lend to a friend and never got back. It is a reversible quilt as you go. However I decided to do the quilting on my machine after I finish the block to give the quilt more strength. I wrote the instructions for the block before I forget the way they are built.  When I started the quilt I was washing all the fabrics. It was a mess, a big mess. The fabric became unruly and frustrating to work with.  Live and learn, that is why is the preferred fabric for rag quilting!

Cada bloque se arma con 4 cuadrados que en este caso son de 4.5 pulgadas. Each block is built with four squares of fabric, these are 4.5 inches. I actually did some strip piecing but for the purpose of this tutorial I have 4 squares. 

En mi modelo cosí un cuadro blanco con uno de color. I used 2 blues and 2 muslin squares for each block. 

Luego se unen dos parejas de cuadros alternando los colores. The squares are sewn together alternating the design.

El punto de unión de los 4 cuadrados va a ser el centro de cada bloque asi que es importante que queden alineados. Se ve clarito lo que paso con las telas al lavarlas, las rayas van para cualquier lado. The union of the 4 pieces of fabric will be the center of the block so it is important to pay attention to neatness there.  You can see clearly what the washing did to the blue fabric. 

Luego se dobla a la mitad y se unen los dos costados (en esta foto la derecha e izq) Then fold and sew on the left and right ends as seen on the picture.

Luego se dobla de la manera que muestra la foto, de modo que cada uno d elos cuadrados originales esta doblado en diagonal. The next step is to fold the block so that each square is folded on its diagonal. 

Se cose (blanco con color y color con blanco) dejando una abertura para darlo vuelta y rellenarlo. Sew leaving an opening (muslin with blue and blue with muslin) 

Cortar un pedazo de guatina un poquito más chico que el bloque. Cut a piece of batting a little bit smaller than the block.

Antes de darlo vuelta, aprendí que es bueno cortar las esquinas que forman los verticas del bloque. Before turning it over I learned it is a good idea to cut the tips of the corners.

Con paciencia rellenar y alisar cada bloque. Unir la abertura a mano con aguja e hilo. Using your patience place the batting inside the block. Sew the opening by hand.

Luego se unen los bloques alternandolos a gusto, esto lo hice a mano. Todavía no terminé de unir todos los bloques pero mi idea es luego acolcharlo a máquina para darle buena firmeza. Sew the block together alternating the orientation of the fabric to suit your taste. Mi quilt is 7 rows by 10 rows, it is now ready to be quilted.

Podemos hacer algo nuevo con retazos de lo viejo.
We can make something new out of the scraps of the old.

Those are Pepe´s Cecilias and Carmela´s shirts. I made it as a demo for a class a feu weeks ago.

opciones options

 

Hay muchas opciones en la vida, solo que hay que estar despierta para verlas. Y ser valiente para tomarlas.

There are many options in life, I (you) just have to be awake to see them. And be brave to make them mine (yours).

 

Uniendo pedazos de telas... esos se pueden desocoser y volver a unir para armar otro diseño. Es solo cuestión de paciencia.

Sewing patches of fabric... those can be undone, and redone to make something brand new. It is just a matter of patience.

 

En la vida no es tan fácil descoser y volver a armar algo nuevo.

In real life is not so easy to take the stiches out and make something new.

 

Pero no por eso hay que dejar de intentarlo.

But that´s not a reason not to try.

Terminado - Finished

Este quilt era para la muestra de Colonia que quedó suspendida. Estuvo bueno jugar con colores ... Hay un grupo en flickr de colchas con colores lisos que me gusta mucho visitar. Me gusta como con diseños simples se puede lograr cosas buenazas.

THis was meant to be on a quilt show in June in COlonia de Sacramento, Uruguay but it was cancelled. It was fun to play with colors.

Mantas nuevas y mantas viejas - Something old something new.

Estoy avanzando en una nueva colcha . Este verano empezamos con Virginia a armar algo nuevo llamado Artemia. Vendimos alguna de las mantas que colgue hace ya unos meses. Esta nueva manta estará disponible y va a ser para cama de soltero.

Además con otras Traperofilas seguimos avanzando en el proyecto de libro. En los próximos 30 dias va a cuajar el trabajo que hicimos. Mucha emoción, mucho nervio y mucho aprendizaje.

 

I am making progress on a new quilt. I will offer it under the Artemia "brand" the same Virignia and I used this summer to sell quilts in José Ignacio.

With my fellow quiltes we have been making a lot of progress on the book. In the next 30 days we will have more news.

navegar es necesario , to sail is necessary

Hice este presente para mi hermano, El mensaje hecho con banderas nauticas es : Navegar es necesario. En la foto mi familia en el 2008 cuando fuimos los cuatro a visitarlo. Tres mascaras de distintos viajes: Venecia, Mejico y la de Guatemala que nos trajo GUille de regalo. Un trozo de arbol petrificado que encontre en una venta hace tiempo. Y un regalo de un viaje de Kevin. Y el tocadisco.

La idea d elas banderas vino de internet. Estan apenas cosidas.

I made this as a present for mi brother. The message made with nautical flags says To sail is necessary. By the side the picture of us in 2008 when we went to visit him in Brazil, Thre masks from different trip: Venice, Mexico and the one that my oldest brought as a present from Guatemala. Petrified wood I found at a garage sale. And the record player.

The inspiration came form the www. I barely sew them, fun.
